A new 3,000 m², 2-storey boys’ student residence at Ashbury College. The residence has two (2) don suites, 18 double suites and 14 single suites for a total of 52 beds. Common lounge areas, TV/games room, laundry and kitchen were incorporated into the facility. In addition, at both ends of the building, semi-detached 2-storey houses were connected for faculty families. Located within the prestigious Rockliffe Park residential neighbourhood, the mechanical equipment was hidden within the full height attic space of the building.
The building has achieved LEED Gold certification under the CaGBC LEED NC (MURB) rating system and the ASHRAE Regional & Chapter Technology Award for New Educational Facilities. To achieve this level of certification the building water consumption is reduced by over 46%; indoor air quality exceeds ASHRAE Standard 62-04 through improved ventilation effectiveness, and superior controllability of systems in both the perimeter and non-perimeter spaces; thermal comfort levels exceed ASHRAE Standard 55-04; and energy efficient systems that result in energy cost savings greater than 38% better than the model national energy code for buildings.
Key features of the building system include 100% make-up air systems with greater than 90% energy recovery; delivery of the make-up air directly to the suites; high efficiency condensing boilers and domestic hot water heaters; variable speed motors on all fans and pumps; low flow plumbing fixtures; centralized lighting control for common areas; and a high performance building envelope system.
