2,100 m², three (3) storey, medical research facility including bio-safety level 1&2 laboratories, animal research facility and administrative office areas, and two (2) storey multi-use work area. The 90 m2 animal holding and laboratory areas are designed to meet the Canadian Council on Animal Care’s Environmental Guidelines & Standards. The animal holding areas are served by a dedicated 100% outdoor HVAC system with environmental temperature zones, filtration and sterilization stations. Key features include 100% make-up air with energy recovery for the animal holding and laboratory areas. The building includes sustainable design & energy efficient features such as energy reclaim, individual exhaust hood airflow controls, air & temperature reset and building & laboratory pressure controls. Unique challenges included mechanical & electrical infrastructure integration, system redundancy design and energy conservation strategies with the optimization of the building’s energy management system.
